The training group starts Monday, January 22nd and runs through the Medina Half Marathon, includes 2 practice sessions a week attended by Renee Harden. 1 practice includes a workout at the track or on soft surface path & 1 long run day from the store on the course. Additionally, the group will team up with Medina Half to attend the official training runs once a month.

Q: How long is early-bird pricing offered?

 

We are excited to offer early-bird pricing through December 31st, 2017. Starting January 1st, pricing will increase $15.00.

Q: When and where will the practices take place?

 

We will meet on Tuesday morning or evening for a supervised workout at various locations depending on the weather. The track at Claggett Middle School will be the primary meeting place on Tuesdays. In case of inclement weather, we will meet at the Medina Recreation Center where you will have to pay a $5 pass or use your membership. A poll will be taken to determine interest in morning vs. evening.

Long runs will take place on Sunday morning from the Second Sole Medina location at 8 a.m. All practices will be attended by Renee Harden or another qualified Second Sole employee in case of emergency.

Q: When will the program start?

“Packet pick-up” will be Saturday, January 20th at Second Sole Medina at 10 a.m. The second official Medina Half Training Run will take place this same morning at 7:30 a.m.If you have the time, attend the training run and then pick up your goodies and meet the coach! The training plan officially begins on Monday, January 22nd.

Q: How will I communicate with the coach?


Coach Renee will provide her email and phone number in case of questions and for general feedback. You will also have access to your own Google spreadsheet where you can log workouts and chat with Coach Renee.

Q: Do you offer refunds?

No refunds will be offered. Please check the practice days and the date of the race to be certain that you can commit to the training program.

Q: Do you offer refreshments at the practices?

No refreshments will be available at Tuesday workouts but water and Gatorade will be available at Second Sole after the runs on Sunday.

Q: Will bathrooms be available at practices?

There is a porta-john available near the Claggett Middle School track and public restrooms on the square next to Second Sole.

Q: What is the day and time of the 2018 Medina Half Marathon and 5K?

Race day is Saturday, May 26, 2018
The half will begin at 6:45am.  Runners should be on the line by 6:35am.
The 5k will begin at 7:00am.  Runners should be on the line as the half marathon runners exit the start line.

Q: What is the cut off time for the race?

Runners running a pace of longer than 3 hours and 20 minutes pace will likely be asked to move towards the sidewalk after mile 6. Our course is mostly residential and safe!  However, once the course closes, please carefully adhere to normal traffic conditions. The race directors will wait at the finish line for EVERY runner to cross the finish line and you will receive a medal. We will also have bike officials on the course communicating with the finish line.  We also have GPS on our bike riders so we know where the beginning, middle and end of the pack is located at all times.

Q: Do you have pace teams?

Each of the pace group will be made up of two pacers wearing bright colored PACER shirts will be in the following goal times:
1:30, 1:40, 1:50, 2:00, 2:10, 2:20, 2:30, 2:40, 2:50, 3:00, 3:10.
Our 3:20 pace group will sweep the course.

Q: Does the Medina Half offer bib transfers or refunds?
                                   
We only allow transfers if the event sells out.  We do not offer deferrals or refunds.
Switching between the 5K & Half?  If it is after May 15th…please just let us know at the expo.

PLEASE DO NOT SELF-SWITCH!  Ask at the expo and it’s an easy switch!  This causes a huge issue with timing if not switched in the computer BEFORE the race starts.

 

 
RENEE HARDEN
You will be working with Second Sole Medina employee, Renee Harden, as your primary coach for the duration of your training program.
 
 
She is a Level 1 certified USATF coach and has coached cross country and track at Buckeye Local Schools in Medina since 2015. Renee has been running in some form or another for 22 years and experienced as a high school and college athlete as well as a fitness runner and post-collegiate competitor. 
 
 

"I've always made sure running fit into my life, whether that meant 10 miles a week as a fitness runner, or 80 miles a week while training for a marathon," she says. "The primary thing I'd like my athletes to know is that I love the sport and this translates into great enthusiasm in sharing it with others."

 

 

Renee finished the Medina Half Marathon in 2014, 2015 and 2016 and will be returning to the race in 2017. So not only will she be coaching you, she'll be training along side you!
 

"The Medina Half is my absolute favorite half marathon because of the local flair, attention to detail and the care that the race directors put into all aspects of the race," Renee says.

 

 

The 18-week training plans were created by Renee and focus on being prepared for a strong half marathon finish, while staying injury-free. We will be working with physical therapists to incorporate "pre-hab" routines in your daily runs. These simple, yet effective exercises will keep you strong and healthy while you train the mileage needed to run a successful half marathon. This combined with the benefits of twice-weekly group runs will set you up for success from the very beginning. We hope you join us and will see you at our first group run on January 23!

CHELSEA HALL
Chelsea Hall (formerly Oswald) is a Medina native who is dedicated to a life of motion. As such, she gravitated to the field of physical therapy, focusing her professional efforts towards getting her patients back to a life of motion and what they are passionate about.
 
Chelsea concluded her bachelor of science studies at University of Kentucky in 2013. As a Wildcat she excelled in both the classroom and athletic arena; as a runner, Chelsea captured SEC titles in both the 5k and 10k. She attained the status of All-American as well as being honored as the Boyd McWhorter SEC female scholar athlete of the year. 
 
After her running career, Chelsea decided to come back to the Buckeye state where she attended The Ohio State University. In 2017, Chelsea earned her Doctorate of Physical Therapy, and began practicing in Marion, Ohio. There she was able to practice in several areas of physical therapy, with focus on orthopedic cases and became certified in functional capacity evaluations. In January 2018, she looks to garner certification in dry needling to better serve her patients. 
 
Now Chelsea has returned home to NE Ohio and cannot be more excited to impact lives in the area she has loved since birth.  In her spare time she enjoys running, exploring outdoors, cooking, and spending time with her husband. Chelsea is looking forward to working and learning alongside some of the areas brightest minds, establishing long lasting relationships with our patients, and keeping you on the move!

In consideration for the acceptance of my registration as a participant in the Second Sole Run Group, and with the understanding that my participation in the Second Sole Run group is only on condition that I enter into this agreement, for myself, my heirs and assignees, I hereby assume the inherent and extraordinary risks involved in the Second Sole Run Group and any risks inherent in any other activities connected with this training group in which I may voluntarily participate. I expressly assume the risk of and accept full responsibility for any and all injuries, including death and accidents which may occur as a result of my participation in the Second Sole Run Group and release from liability, Second Sole Ohio, Second Sole Racing, Medina Half Marathon and each of their representatives, employees, and members. I hereby waive any claim I may have hereafter as a result of my participation in the Second Sole Run Group and in any other activities connected with this training group in which I may voluntarily participate. I hereby agree to indemnify Second Sole and its employees/representatives for any damages to myself or my property which may occur as a result of my voluntary participation in the Second Sole Run Group.
 
I give Second Sole the absolute right and permission to use my photographs(s) in its promotional materials and publicity efforts. I understand that the photograph(s) may be used in a publication, print ad, direct-mail piece, electronic media (e.g., DVD, video, Internet) or other form of promotion or information. I release Second Sole, its agents, staff, and the photographer from liability for any violation of any personal or proprietary right I may have in connection with such use.
